So it became kind of an icon which has started to lose significance only in early 2000s and not before that.

An interesting observation, never noticed that. Most Estonian painters also paint only gray and dreary light. Johann Köler's pretty much the only example I found who uses some vibrant light, and even that is pretty muted.
