Politically, the rise of the nation state had more to do with the end of the 100 years war and the treaty of Westphalia and an agreement that a countries king could choose it's religion. Not that technology did not play a role, but I think it's oversimplifying it.
For any entity to stand up to the church ,it first needed a means for people to question its power (printing press) and raise large, unified armies to enforce a large political entity (crossbows and guns).
