Usually donating to a registered charity is tax deductible, and it can be a good way to reduce the amount that you owe the government without having to give the government your money. Instead you get to be the one who chooses what the money is used for, or better yet if you give it to the right charities you can just launder the money and keep it, like rich people do (which is the main reason so many rich people run charities in the first place).
