As a matter of fact, it can't be logic or reason, because the vast majority of atheists shield themselves with embarrassing arguments like "if god real why bad things", "if god real why he doesnt paint cross in sky", "too many religions therefore god not real", "who created god", arguments so idiotic that they were answered more than a thousand years ago by Catholic intellectuals and even before the time of Christ by other philosophers. It can't be due to scientific advancements, because the Church developed the scientific method and theories like the big bang or evolution.
Atheism is extremely retarded, it is logically unjustifiable, it makes absolutely zero sense from a logical, philosophical, cosmological and moral point of view. If atheism is true, then I can't even logically justify my own existence nor my thoughts.
The pillars of atheism are debauchery and pride. The reason people become atheists is because they want to live hedonistic lives without being held accountable for it, why do you think widespread atheism is a relatively new phenomenon that has been steadily rising as the world becomes more and more degenerate? As things as abhorrent as pornography, greed, promiscuity or drug use become "normal" and "fun"? These days, people want to be their own gods, they want to worship themselves and their sins.

I'll answer the OP anecdotally, I was turned off from religion in my youth from seeing how absolutely corrupt the whole of religious institutions are. What it appeared to me was that people only associate with churches to be part of a larger organization and extend their own personal power thereby. It had little to do with philosophy
