Italy is best thought of as a third world country. To people from Switzerland, Holland, Australia or New Zealand the culture shock can be severe. Despite the distant history still providing Italy with beauty and an identity, the fact is that in modern times, the experience of living in Italy is more closely aligned with the experience of living somewhere like India or South East Asia.

Think that’s too bold? The rivers are polluted with plastic as far up as the remote valleys of Tuscany, Puglia, Lombardy, Sicily - you name it. The pollution is disgraceful and they don’t have the excuse of being uneducated in Italy. They just, by and large, don’t respect their environment enough to advocate convincingly for its protection. If you come to Italy, expect your beautiful view to be contaminated by the lazy carelessness of others.

The buildings are poorly maintained in almost all areas. All you need to do is drive around in winter to see how disgracefully they look after their buildings. A few historical touristic places are kept up but in general there are many dilapidated, crumbling, damp buildings with paint peeling that hasn’t been refreshed in 20 years. The only real reconstruction and maintenance of properties to a high degree appears to be completed by foreigners.

The driving is suicidal. Not only are they fast drivers, they’re bad drivers. I wish I had a Euro for every selfish, dangerous and chaotic manoeuvre I’d seen. It’s not that they’re skilled either.

The bureaucracy is a joke. You can’t get anything done here without the obligatory dedication of an enormous amount of stress and time robbed of you by pointless, stupid and woefully organised bureaucratic processes. T

In England you drop into most small villages and their cafes have great food. France is similar. Italy? Unless you're paying top dollar for good Italian - it's really poor, stodgy food.
