Our caveman ancestors (if you subscribe to evolution) probably didn't fucking care and fucked on the spot whenever the impulse came in, like most animals do, right in front of everyone. Then there's depictions of people in ancient times and medieval fucking right in front of their kids. So I take it for a long time it was probably normal to see people just fucking around, as well it was normal to see people taking a shit or a piss somewhere, even if unpleasant to look at.
There's also a caveat in that by making sex taboo it then becomes something to be vulnerable to. The trauma is only there because it was imposed, just like shame from nudity.
ie, people see sex happening all the time, brain sees it as normal, no trauma or shame. Culture makes it private and taboo, now there's a potential for trauma and shame. Is this a good tradeoff?
