The biggest sign of a shithole country is a lack of social cohesion/trust or a high crime rate. The generally held public belief that the country isn't worth shit. When you reach that point you're a shithole.
Fuckan, my dads a nam vet, joined marine corps in 65, reinlisted in navy, to do river patrol, but got fucked over and ended up a machinist mate on uss coral sea. He's the eternal boomers exception, I guess. So he received two purple hearts and a ton of other medals and ribbons during his first tours in the marine corps. It where he got his 100% disability ,which was 30%/70%. 30%mental from extreme ptsd and 70%physical from gunshot wounds and then mortar fire shrapnel in a fire fight where 80%of his unit were killed and my dad carried a soldier miles to nearest fireball where he later died in surgery all why he was wounded severely himself. He never rely talked about it. Told me a story about his first tour in country. Said him and about 5 guys from his unit took a tour of marble mountain monastery, given by monks. Said they left their weapons outside of the monastery as we're the rules . Later(years) it become known that under that monastery was one of the biggest nva hospitals operating at the time. But most of the horrific shit he did was in the corps. Now the navy, hell he was almost kicked out for getting clap like 13 times, all his stories are about pussy and the riots on the ship during a race war era. I have 2 sisters in the Philippines, a brother in Japan and a sister in Laos. My dad respected the way the nva fought. He was an advisor early on like 65-66, but said they had killed 5 Russians and several Chinese regular army, training nva, which Russia just came out in the last decade and admitted to having played a hand in Vietnam War.
