The point of this specifically is to just reproduce what a camera is already able to do (although it also works without line-of-sight). This is done to overcome people feeling uncomfortable with being watched by a camera, and how they ethically justify their research. We all know the real reason why they want this technology. I have reliable info that big tech companies such as Huawei, Amazon and Google are funding research in this area at western education institutions

I heard about this from a person currently doing research in the area of wireless communications, the OP is essentially how he explained it to me. From my understanding of the study I linked, I believe that a person present in the wireless channel between the router and device has some kind of effect on the amplitude and phase information of the signal. If people understand what it is, how it works, and the fact that it might be happening we can hopefully stop govt/media from controlling the narrative. They want this technology so they can get around people being mad about being watched by cameras.
