The hidden history is the propaganda war. Hitler didn't really take France by force, France wasn't motivated to fight because Hitler sympathizers dominated the narrative in France at the time. The grunts in the military didn't consider the Germans an existential threat and they weren't.
Most Americans sympathized with Hitler at the start but after a few years of wartime propaganda opinions shifted globally.
I think Hitler mostly saw things in those terms, not in military terms which wasn't as important but creating the right symbolic signals to motivate surrender and alliances. He underestimated the counter propaganda and always worked as though the world thought like it thought at the start of the war.
