In academia speak, Assistant Professor is full-time tenure-track professor role, and Associate Professor means he's been there full-time many years and cleared various hoops and is now tenured. Just "Professor" is a late career title and mostly honorary (though your salary does keep going up over time).

A Panda Express general manager contributes so much more to society than a gay professor. It really is outrageous that the professor makes almost as much money.

Cool I get these signs around my area too. I started at $55k with a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering. I'd prefer my less money for an at-home office job over working with people any day of the week.

Also don't go into mechanical engineering. There are roughly 30k new graduates every year but only 2.5-3k new position openings per year. Good luck getting a job if you choose to ignore that.

Academia is a scam. Especially if you get into the post-grad academia scam. You are volunteering to become a slave class for baby boomers at university. You are not be trained with applicable skills. You are actually becoming less employable every time you decide to up your degree. You are digging yourself further into indenture servitude, little different than a secretary, no possibility for a real position because you're competing with 100 people exactly like you.

How are you paid so little? I live in an extremely low cost of living state, our living wage is 11/hr, and mechanical engineers like my two buddies got paid 65k to 70k start and are making over 100k now.

Many of them are making less then $40,000 while having to work 12 hours almost every day of the year

Cost of living is really low here. 65k salary is enough to own a 3500 Sq ft home. Salaries in California are higher but they all rent their homes like you do.
