I've seen a lot of people use it as a buzzword, and never gotten if it actually has any meaning.
Historically it's a nazi term used to basically call any shit you don't like, so I don't think looking there is productive either.

A divergent branch of marxism developed by the Frankfurt School, using a modified definition of "the working class". Marxists in the post WW2 US were faced with the problem that wage labourers were not leading the revolution as marx had predicted. They had two choices.
1. Accept that marx's predictions were incorrect.
2. Accept that marx's understanding of who the working class were was incorrect.
They chose the second option. Rather than defining the working class to be wage labourers as marx did, they used the prediction that the working class would lead the revolution as their new definition for the working class. Whatever group was revolting against the US was now, by definition, the working class. This is how the western left shifted focus to women, non whites, gays, students etc. Since wage labourers weren't overthrowing their societies as marx predicted, the Frankfurt School concluded that they mustn't be the real working class. Since students and women and non whites and gays were the ones overthrowing their societies, these groups were seen as the real working class, because they were the ones doing what marx said the working class would do.

Well you know how Marx said if two people aren't equal it's usually easier to take from the one who has less than give to the other?
Apply that concept on a large scale onto academics, or arts or entertainment or any field of your choice and it's cultural marxism,
did a pretty good job summing it up actually, the idea is that if you keep taking away peoples culture and identity slowly step by step they won't even notice becoming equals and hence be unable to oppose it.
Obviously we don't have any actual cultural Marxism in the western world, since anyone non-white is in fact encouraged to share their culture provided it overrides white culture in some shape or form.
Actual cultural Marxism would be like what the USSR did to all religions regardless of orientation or history, first you may only preach in certain locations, then on certain days and then not at all and obviously people noticed back when.
The reason it's being used as a buzz word for the intentional and targeted subversion of american culture is that both try to be too slow and gradual for the general population to catch on and both of them suck at accomplishing this.
