All you really need to start out is some scrap steel, a decent hammer, and a means of heating it up. A piece of railroad track is a decent starter anvil, and railroad spikes are kinda meh steel but are good for getting used to shaping metal.
Obviously, but can you realistically learn all you need both forging and welding just by doing? Can you just find diagrams at shit like ABANA and try it straight until it works? From a cursory glance I know there are several special tricks to working various metals, such as soft steel should not be cooled in water under basically any circumstances. Figuring these things out while simultaneously figuring out sourcing for the metal, tooling required and its quality, etc. sounds daunting, but mostly doable. First real concern is: - skill ceiling due to lack of guidance re: technique and specificity of working different metals and such - multiskill requirements (you may need pottery and woodworking skills depending on what you're doing; you'll almost always need drawing skills) - the ability to make sufficiently high-quality works that would be sellable, and in particular the ability to test and evaluate the quality of the resulting work (e.g. does it fit technical constraints like durability?)
