If modern science exists is unironically thanks to Christianity. A millenary education to truth, as Nietzsche called it. Those 1000 years of development of philosophy under the beliefs of the sensible work as a perfect work of omnipotence and not just an imperfect copy of an ideal world, and physical determinism depending of the omniscience of God, is what allowed modern science to be born in Europe, and not in any other part of the world, at any other time of history.

Technological progress was stifled in the West. Trying to improve society or how we live was shunned and stopped at every turn. Why? Because it has an implication. It implies that if you want to make the temporal and earthly world a better place, you must be a heathen and not believe in the eternal world of God. Because if you did, you would have no desire to make the "temporary" world improved.
