I put a couple of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests in with the TGA. I got a refusal on FOI 3545 because they don't have the software to read a database and output a spreadsheet, and it would take too many resources to produce the spreadsheet. I haven't worked much with databases, but I'm pretty sure I could produce the output I wanted within a few minutes of fumbling through SQL commands.

For a bit of background, I made a FOI request before which was asking for a lot more information, including the batch codes, symptoms, deaths, age and sex etc. It was rejected on the grounds above plus privacy (and something that seemed to be because I was requesting the information from DAEN not AEMS). I shortened my request to the bare minimum which seems to have removed the privacy objection, but apparently no one at the TGA knows how to use a database. Can a database user comment on how difficult it would be to get this information? Do government departments use databases that are effectively non-functional? Another FOI reply image to follow…

I also submitted FOI 3546 at the same time which was rejected because they don't have any information comparing the safety of COVID-19 vaccine batches. This reply does give some useful information in that 55% of entries in AEMS have batch codes.

Have any of you dealt with FOI requests before? Any suggestions for how to proceed?
