personally I'm in north central illinois and there is no conceivable way I will possibly ever own farmland here, the prices are insane, could be 10k an acre, it's a travesty
looking at virginia where I might be able to get like 3.5k an acre for about 20 acres

some land is still cheap here up north, but growing season is short still looking for the perfect plot for a proper hydro power installation that can run during winter

Kenai .. maaaan it rains like a motherfucker up there. Then it snows like a motherfucker. Tons of bear, moose, salmon, you name it. Growing anything substantial will require a greenhouse. Still, totally do-able if you have the cash to set yourself up right on that plot. Most people don't like in places like that year-round, they have a place in or near town and just hit the hunting cabin when they feel like it.
