Russia HAS to attack Ukraine because with each passing day American influence in Ukraine increases and Russian influence in Ukraine gets closer to rock bottom. Putin cannot let that happen, Ukraine must remain either finlandized ("neutral") or a russian puppet. Putin is dumb.America never wanted to let Ukraine into NATO, fearing tensions precisely, but now Putin made it a point of prestige for America (as it doesnt want to be seen as acquiescing to Putin's demand). Under Western patronage, Ukraine would develop & quickly surpass Russia. Russians wouldnt be able to cope/perform mental gymnastics anymore, itd be plain as day: Eact Slavic brethren, "same people as Russians" COULD live well and w/e a despot. Russians would begin asking questions. He can't let that happen. It would be the end of him
