In the past, he was somewhat respectable, though he was often criticized for buying up or ruining competitors. Later, Windows started to turn into Big Brother software, where you have less and less control over the OS, and it's constantly spying on you or bugging you. Gates also started to become increasingly obnoxious when he got involved in politics, which usually meant taking the most politically correct stance, donating money to and pushing generic causes that makes him look good to the brainless masses, while in reality accomplishing nothing or just making things worse.
Today, he's a sanctimonious, hypocritical tyrant who spies on his costumers and pretends to be a philanthropist.
Meanwhile, Musk just does whatever he wants, throws money at new technologies, avoids being politically correct and shitposts on his free time. He still does some dumb shit, but he's better than Bill Gates, at least.

Bill Gates copied every successful product he ever marketed, if he didnt just buy an immitation like DOS. From MS-Basic to MS-DOS they kind of just stole what ever IP they could get their hands on, and then used his connections at IBM to exclude the original competition.
If it wasnt for that 401(c) they got, he would still be known as the most vile and greedy, pasty ass nerd in existence.

Musk sells sci-fi MARKETING, and attracts investments and grants in a speculative manner on a basis of pure promise and PR, but he almost never delivers on those promises, and either sells a rebranded and overpriced version of an already existing stuff (like with cars), or nothing at all (like with Mars or Hyperloop)
