Tech giants including Microsoft, Oracle, and Cerner and healthcare companies Cigna and Pfizer in January became part of a World Economic Forum sponsored coalition pushing for digital records of people who get vaccinated against COVID-19 in a secure and verifiable way through implanted microchips. Implanted microchips aim at making daily life more convenient and are already used by a number of people and companies around the world to replace keys, access cards and IDs.
Costing 100 euros for a microchip, the device works by scanning the spot on the right hand or forehead with a mobile phone or any device using the near-field communication (NFC) protocol. While new in humans, this kind of technology is very common for household pets, where most of them are embedded with a microchip that reveals the animal’s medical history when scanned. The Biden administration, the British government, and the European Union are currently considering their feasibility. A survey found 81.8% of Americans support the idea of vaccine passports, digital or physical proof of vaccination against COVID.
Although travel eligibility has been the primary focus to date, some use of microchips to regulate access to social and recreational gatherings, workplaces, or schools appears imminent. Discussions have also occurred to tie vaccination records to payment processes. The current vaccination record system does not readily support convenient access, control, and sharing of verifiable vaccination records. Trustworthy, traceable, verifiable, and universally recognized implantable digital records of vaccination status are urgently needed worldwide to safely enable people to return to work, school, events, and travel.

Earlier in the pandemic, there was an application that tracked people's location in case they were found to be infected, so the authorities could cross-reference the data with other people who were nearby and either warn people or find whoever infected them.
