You are misquoting Nietzsche because you have removed the context. If you read what follows that quotation, then you'll understand what he really meant when he stated "God is dead". Here's is the quotation:

I don't agree with a lot of what Nietzsche writes because I think his thoughts are nihilistic in many ways, or they lead to nihilism. But without any doubt, he could have me in a fight. Just look at his moustache.

Nietzsche hangout with Wagner, who was famous antisemite and who wanted to rebirth original European religion.
