It's not possible because russia has always been on the periphery of Europe and Asia. Its also always been on a a plain. This means that their geopolitical ambitions need to always be hostile to both Europe and Asia. In Europe, they have to secure themselves from an attack from the west (the plain makes it easy to invade), that's why they have ambitions on Ukraine, belarus and the baltics. In Asia, they need to keep control of their ethnic minorities and of the central Asian countries. Russia can never be completely pro-europe or pro-asia. The only reason they seemed pro-european was because of Peter the Great who wanted to make russia seem more european.
