I agree. It would be different if Ukraine was some thriving economy and wealthy. I know Ukraine has good soil for growing things, but Russia has enough for this, too. It's not really gaining anything for Putin.. I know it gives him a buffer zone against NATO, but NATO is not going to ever attack Russia. I think it's just stuck in Putin's mind that his singular goal in life is to keep adding countries back to Russia (in terms of these countries being puppet states like in the USSR days). It's simply a geographical goal, without any real economic benefit. In fact, despite all this talk that "Russia can easily handle sanctions".. that is not true. The sanctions will be devestating to the Russian economy.. and while likely not enough to cause protests in the streets (Russian know now that protesting can be deadly), it will destroy the value of the Ruble, and Russia will depend more and more on China. The funniest thing is that China will eventually eat Russia alive if they trust China too much and get too dependent on them. Putin just has tunnel-vision on reuniting Ukraine with Russia at all costs. The costs will be big. And not worth it. Well, they say the old man is a gambler.. I guess let him gamble.

Most young people could give a fuck about 'clay'.. Russia has the most 'clay' in the world already. Young Russians don't care too much about the glory of the USSR.. they want better economic prospects. Only the old, ancient Russians lost in the past enjoy Putin's military conquests. What most Russians need is better pensions and more economic opportunities. A lot of the young, well-educated Russians still leave the country for better salaries, and a feeling of moving to a country that is moving forwards, not backwards into the past.

I used to believe this a month ago, but the buildup is ramping up to a level far beyond what it needs to just to threaten. He's pulling military assets from all over the country, at high expense. I do think it's a fair request from Putin that Ukraine never becomes a NATO country. I hope there is no invasion.. as literally EVERYONE loses in this scenario.. but it seems it really is likely going to happen.
