Have you ever played Europa Universalis 4? If you are a smaller nation, a strategy to prevent invasion is keep a lesser country bordering between you and your adversary.
A great example of this is Ethiopia. Ethiopia has fast expansion, but two big bad guys on its horizon to reconquering Coptic (a sect of Christianity) religious sites. Those two bad guys are Mamluks (Egypt/Jersualem muslims) and Ottomans (Turks). So while you expand, you keep a shitty nation bordering between you and Mamluks, until you are ready for the big duel. If you border them, they will want your territory, assess your weakness, and attack. However, if you ally the shitty nation, guarantee it, you may prevent war for a time.

In modern times, NATO promised the Soviet Union it would not expand NATO east. Yes, this is a long time ago, but NATO expansion can be seen as aggression because it is easy to stage a false flag and it is obvious both the Soviets and Americans are/were good at making excuses for war.
In 2008 Ukraine and Georgia were very close to joining NATO, surrounding Russia with what has been the sole superpower since the 1990s.
Here is where people don't understand old Vlad. 1) everyone in the west has a bias to western diplomacy. This is one reason people didn't get Trump. If you look at North Korea, China, Iran, they are using military flexing to show their strength. They are NOT using this Obama tier charisma to woo their opponents in a 'rational' and pleasant discussion. Russia obviously isn't playing this western game of diplomacy either.

They have said they will not tolerate NATO at their borders. This is like the meme people post where they say, "look, Iran or China wants war with the US, look how close their borders are with our US military bases. Russia obviously doesn't want this because it means missiles can be placed right at their border.
Putin has said if these border countries attempt to join, he will sow as much discord as to wreck the countries.

The best solution out of this scenario is to keep Ukraine as a buffer between NATO and Russia.
Ukraine is also deeply corrupted. Russia is too (and US), but US has interests in it with the Biden son being tied to a gas company there. My point here though is Ukraine is a country that could easily become a failed state like those drawn in sikes-pikot agreement in middle east since the country is slavic, but split upon different cultural lines that could easily split into part russia or into two new countries. Where this corruption causes an issue though is tied to Russia's nord stream 2 pipeline to the rest of Europe since most of Europe doesn't have an easy pathway for fuel (look at their gas prices).

I don't think Vladimir has ambitions to bring back old Russian borders, because the countries economy really sucks. Its less than Canada, and less than Texas. This is just a guy that doesn't play the West's games of diplomacy and is flexing in their best way, the military to have diplomacy.

He was a master at Napoleonic tactics, which made him a great commander, but there were other commanders like stonewall and another i've forgotten using modern military strategy that would have been cutting edge at the time since Napoleonic tactics by the 1860s were old hat, as you can see by people studying Civil War tactics to adapt to WW1 after since it was one of the most recent big wars
