Owls can make very affectionate pets if you raise them right. To answer your question as to why birds are the white man's pet, they are difficult to raise compared to other animals and require a lot of maintenance. For many species such as finches and canaries, you don't even get a lot of affection back but instead keep them for more abstract reasons such as liking their colors, songs, or even just an appreciation for that kind of life. They also require enormous amounts of patience. Parrots, while they are capable of showing lots of affection, are also enormous trouble, but they aren't durable, so when a shitskin loses their temper at their antics and does something like physically slap the bird, it can do a ton of damage verses dogs/cats.

Birds are expnsive and get stressed easy, the feral / grabage dog is the real man pet
