Can Ameribros explain to me how executive orders are supposed to work? It seems like a way around the Legislative Branch. In the past administrations I just see Presidents signing executive orders like they were laws. I get that they can be challenged/stopped in courts but are they being abused?

So after congress passes a bill and the president signs it into law, it's left up to the Executive branch to determine how to enforce it. Realistically the law would be written in such a way that there's only a bit of wiggle room. In a sane world it wouldn't be completely open to interpretation.
Well in modern day congress does not actually perform their duties and writes open ended bullshit. Everything from writing out their declaration of war powers to allow the Executive to take unilateral foreign military action to broadly written emergency declarations.
This has been compounded over time to the point the seat of President is basically a dictator-like position that can heavily alter how law is executed. Also there are still Emergencies active from like 80+ years ago.

I don't think this is accurate either. The USA world police has been mocked a lot longer than that and has it's origination in Mutually Assured Destruction. If we're supposed to be able to have a 5-10 minute response time to launch nukes against another nuclear power, then basically anything that allows that also allows the US to use the highest level military force without going through congress (because they're no fucking way they could agree to anything in just a few minutes).
The Patriot Act was passed before Obama, and was not a normal declaration of war.

BBB was a bloated bill filled with kickbacks and gibs for the useless. By voting it down, Congress has forced Biden to use executive orders which are way smaller in scope, more transparent, and can be revoked by a future president. Basically we get the useful parts of BBB while all the crappy stuff gets tossed out.
