Russia is no. 5 in GDP PPP, which is a better metric than nominal GDP because 99% of Russia's weapons are manufactured locally and their soldiers are paid local wages. In any case, the reason Russia matters in the Sino-US rivalry is not so much because they are a great economic power, rather because
(1) Russia constitutes a second front and a distraction. Every dollar spent on ground forces for use in Europe is a dollar not spent on naval forces for use in the Pacific. Meanwhile, China is free to focus on their navy and air force.
(2) Russia can supply much of the resources that China needs through overland links even in the case of a blockade, most importantly fuel.
(3) Russia still benefits from the Soviet legacy, most importantly a sizeable fleet of nuclear attack submarines that have the potential, at least in theory, wreak havoc on global commerce.
