I walked out on the ice in Lake Michigan years ago. Got far enough out I could see down the coast and realized the ice at the end was like a sheer cliff, so I didnt go to the edge. If you went in, there would be no way out.
Some guy around here a couple years ago killed himself that way, jumping in. Sort of sucks because I imagine he lived quite awhile and probably died regretting his choice.
Very easy to get lost if you walk out too far and lose your bearings.

no it's pretty common, i was out ice skating on a lake in wisconsin recently. i think maybe Lake Michigan is big enough that it doesn't freeze solid or something so they thought this guy was trying to commit suicide or on meth (which i guarantee he was one or both of those things)

Those lakes are like the size of the English Channel, and only temporarily frozen. Dude would have ended up dead from either falling through the ice or exposure at some point.
