Why would you pay tax on something you own? Isn't tax for when a good, property or service is sold/bought? Nothing changes hand so no tax is possible innit bois? Do you pay tax for owning a car? Surely not.

Yeah as a generally anti-tax person who works in public policy, property tax is one I actually have less issue with. Property is a finite resource, directly related to the government's role since they exist to protect all property in their jurisdiction. Property is one of the most logical things to tax, especially since they make no money back on vacant properties & other public lands.

Council tax provides services in return, it's not a tax but a contract. You dont pay council tax if the house is empty or if you dont live in it, not a property tax in any way.
