That doesn't look like a very nice place, relatively speaking. Those apartments are tiny. You can see the partitions - those are between individual units, where young men live their entire lives in probably 17sqm of space. But yeah, obviously it's not like those pictures of Detroit you see here.
If anything Japanese hospitality is totally soulless. There's a "correct" way of doing everything, and while it's perfectly pleasant, it means never deviating from the set principles of omotenashi. So you never get an actual human connection, just someone reciting lines from a script. But hey, it also means you never get BAD experiences.
