Even the worker exploitation stuff is only so unforgivable because poor people are forced to work by the government, which will evict them if they don't.

As far as the history of communism in the USA though, obviously the USA could be realistically considered "socialist" for a period of about 50 years from FDR to Reagan. And FDR himself must have obviously been a socialist. He was our best president and gave us our best decades before the policies he made were slashed by the "free market" capitalists of the 80s and 90s
