I think I know what's spooking them actually. The Russians moved auxiliary forces up to the Ukraine border. Those are what you use to hold territory your army has just captured, so your army can keep capturing more instead of holding it themselves. The number of these auxiliaries is not something you can keep idle and well fed for very long. Plus Kadyrov is also maneuvering his army closer. Plus there's that dense S-400/Pantsir coverage over East Europe.
