Well that, and the fact that most social websites like Tiktok sell fake users to push popularity. People then use this information to sell themselves to larger corporations. Corporations see numbers and actually believe it. If the site doesn't sell it, users manipulate and do it on the site regardless.
If genuine people actually got support from social media, it could lead to civil unrest and lost profitability. If you had enough money you could start a movement and it would be moderately successful if you knew how to game the system.
