Seriously though, geotechnical engineer here, America has some of the best engineers and architects in the world. Many iconic architectural and engineering feats like the Burj Khalifa are designed by Americans. Look up Adrian Smith.
Most of the reason we don't do classical architecture anymore is because it is inefficient, and no one wants to pay for it. We have the capability to build whatever you fucking want, but you have to pay for it, and you have to get the right zoning paperwork for it.
The purpose of the Chicago World Fair was to advertise the capability of America on the world stage at a time when this was the best marketing strategy around. It cost a fuck ton of money to pull this off. This display isn't really necessary anymore.
Good luck getting any of this shit approved by the client when they see what it costs to build and maintain it. We have sacrificed whatever nobility we have had as a nation in exchange for maximum profits and bottom lines (so we can spend it on niggers and military contractors obviously)

Good luck convincing a client to pay for it. Some people do - there are many mansions constructed in a similar style. They cost 2-3x more to build, and 4x more to maintain than modern houses, not to mention the design fees.
Back in the day before modern building methods, the most expensive part of one of these castles was the stained-glass windows. All large building work was done by hand and built using stone, so ornate buildings weren't that much more expensive than plain ones compared to the modern day.
