A recent Chinese "poll" put Russia as their #3 most hated country. Now, there's no way that the poll is actually an opinion poll, because Chinese people can't have original thoughts in Xi's government. But putting Russia at #3 indicates that government propaganda would like their citizens to hate Russia only slightly less than the USA and Canada.
So, if the government is saying that the government hates Russia, I don't really see how the two are at all "friends." The two governments cooperate in military, space, and economic terms, but they are NOT in any kind of ideological or cultural agreement. All of the cooperation is merely born out of convenience. It is foolish to think that China cares for anyone except China, and it is also foolish to think that Russia believes China will assist if it does not benefit China.
Russia and China can work on space missions to the moon because it's convenient for both of them. Space is expensive.
Russia and China will trade. China is a good market for Russian goods and resources, and Russia can use Chinese industrial capacity.

This story is an example, China helped Russia on the Kazakhstan situation because Kazakhstan is a vital area for the belt and road project. Converging interests is the same reason China sides with Russia over Ukraine, because if Russia gets a greenlight on Ukraine then it means China can do the same thing with Taiwan.
