With his recent discussion about the snake on the rod in exodus he had a huge intellectual discussion, and said it took him years of study.
He understood it was a Christophony but lacked the context that they have to look to the snake to be healed. Point being, the nation of Israel was so large they were unable to see it throughout the entire camp- since it was only on a rod not very high.
