Its both race and religion. If your born to a Jew woman then you are considered a Jew for life regardless of beliefs. A non jew can convert to Judaism but he is not seen as a full Jew, though if he marries Jewish his kids will be full Jews.

You are correct. Christians who had ashkenazi ancestry were not considered jews by nazis. The nazis were skeptial of some conversions that occured after they came to power, thinking they were fake, but authentic Christians, such as those that were Christian before they came to power, were not considered jewsih even if they had jewish ancestors.

This is the dumbest thing being pushed on this board right now. Jews are a race before a religion, to the point where if a Jewish child is raised by any other race, it's still likelh to act in a Jewish way. It is in their blood to be the rats that they are. The religion is just a group survival mechanism for keeping them together in physical locations where they can safely meet others of their kind.

Yes, including by themselves. The vast majority of aethist jews still identify as jewish. They basically follow a secular version of judaism, which still has the cultural aspects of the judaic religion. They still deliberately put themselves in that community. There really are no sizeable group of ethnically ashkenazi people that are free from the jewish identity.
