Whats the point of working as engineer or scientist? You spend over 3/4 of your free time learning and improving yourself. You solve extremely complicated problems which few human beings can. You get exploited in every way possible despite usually being one of the few people that bring value to your company. You get paid absolute dog shit salary.

It's one thing to improve yourself for your own ends, another thing to improve yourself to make upper management 10x more money while you get nothing.
Engineering compensation is broken, it's why it's customary for engineers to leave their company every 2 years to negotiate for higher salaries. All skilled labor is like this.
The real problem is management compensation. It's a piss easy job compared to engineering.

Systems Engineer here. I can fix any practical issue in almost any discipline. I've designed data systems, I've reviewed methods of moving crude from tanks to ships, I've even figured how how to remove stuck machinery from the bottom of a mine. Average CERN data scientist makes around $150k. Consultant physicist salary is around $100k. IT engineers and network engineers makes $100k. NASA research scientist is $128k. Research physicist makes $60-120k. Similar for software engineering.
