You can tell because they added a perk called Tank that reduces your walking speed regardless of how light your armor is but ups your health.
ie if you're dueling, there is no reason not to ever be a giant in full plate.

Its hitscan so your swings clip through people without doing damage unless your reticle is on their hitbox at the timed damage portion of the swing.
