No, the only thing it really needs is a steady growth of manufacturing technology and wages.
The number of consumers doesn't matter, because you can bring down manufacturing costs with better tech to a point it costs fucking nothing.
Instead of this old model what happened was that the manufacturing costs were brought low as dirt with outsourcing, jobs went away and the wages never grew and prices didn't really go down.
Instead of growing the wages people were given debt to supplement their diminishing income.
The entire capitalistic model was subverted completely and became one sided thing where the consumer got fucked and the top makes more money.
Steady growth was switched to a quick leveraged profit and soon we'll all be paying for this borrowed money when the economy shits the bed and all assets get transferred from the bottom to the top.
