What separates classical music from folk is the abstract approach taken by the composer to produce the work. It is music for its own sake.

The theme (be it a rhythm, short melody, etc.) is developed in many ways that the composer sees appropriate. Some methods include:

- canon
- fugue
- variation
- sonata form
- rondo
- etc

The hardest of all to grasp is the technique of symphonic development.
