In 1965, 30 out of 31 Republicans in the US Senate voted to pass the Voting Rights Act which prohibited racial discrimination in voting. Today every Republican in the Senate is working to end those protections. Every damn one of them. Does voting for a party that is 100% racist make someone a racist? I think it all depends on what they do now that it’s clear Republicans are a racist party. If they are like, whoops, sorry, won’t do that again; then clearly not. I encouraged many to read or reread Dr. King’s Letter from the Birmingham jail and his response to those who would say this is not the right time, or that confronting racism isn’t the right way. But as I read more of the “where in this is the love I usually hear from Penzeys” emails, I came to see that missing in their words was any sense of those on the receiving end of racism.
