It's always been in the UK's interest to prevent hostile hegemony over Europe, as then there could be a direct threat to the UK (amphibious invasions are very difficult and we'll beyond any individual European country to successfully invade UK by itself). To this end it has constantly stuck it's nose in to European affairs to prevent any one nation becoming top. Often by aiding smaller countries against bigger ones. As these countries had bigger populations and much larger armies Britain had to fight dirty to succeed. Hence 'perfidous Albion', although the UK's actions have also ensured many small European countries continue to exist. In previous eras the threat has come from Spain, France or Germany. Since WW2 it has been Russia.

In addition to the geostrategic issues, the UK has close to zero economic links with Russia and buys close to zero fossil fuels from them. There is no economic effect what so ever from bad relations with Russia.

For the entire existence of the UK, it has had the single-minded autistic obsession with maintaining a balance of power on the continent. Any time a single power is getting too powerful and influential, it teams up with the other side to take them down a peg. For every war the UK has been in since the peace of Westphalia, this has been its goal. It knows that a strong European power would be the only power capable of invading it (perhaps less true now, but historically true). Russia today is threatening the balance of power and might get too big for the UK to properly play off the European powers against each other. That’s all they want to do.

I have been thinking this too. If NS2 is such an issue and the Germans are refusing to be sensible it should be destroyed by SBS or something. It should be made to look like an accident to avoid diplomatic problems.

I also think that Wagner group should be destroyed in all the locations it is active outside of Syria at the slightest hint of bad behaviour (which shouldn't be hard to find).
