In my experience as a middle school teacher, in music, my opinion is that the forced mask thing prevented students from connecting with me on a level that would help them in their subject, performance of such, etc. I stand back from my students, as per the rules from administration, and take my mask off. The kids are far more receptive and disciplined. Put it back on, I observe their inability to truly understand any concept, lack of internalization. Children cannot fully engage in learning without constant observation of facial expressions, they learn by gesticulated verbiage, facial expressions and smiles help them feel relaxed, trusting, in their environment. They don’t understand emotional facial expressions, either, if they’re deprived so young from learning these visual reasoning skills.
We’ve blunted their vision, as a sense, ignoring it takes sight and sound for children to model adults. I get in trouble frequently for having my mask down, but I follow the rules and remain 6 feet back, but it’s the optics of it, from admin’s view. and I tell them, fire me, then. Even in my students’ age bracket, they’ve definitely been impacted significantly in learning since they’re sight has been blunted in lieu of the hysteria surrounding the kung flu. Fucking lame rules that do nothing for anyone except create a god damned “us or them,” ideology and playing upon the nature of a child.
