Ukraine has drastically changed, a majority want independence as a ukrainian state even if they hate the government. Probably a quarter would fight even guerilla warfare. That would require probably more than a quarter million to 300k russian occupying troops in the event of total occupation. The size of the russian contingent implies they would want a swift attack and concession rather than occupation.
Areas like kharkiv, poltava, odessa would see pro russian militants organically.
My guess is that russia wants to subjugate or displace the government of ukraine, ideally establishing a federalized system with large devovled local powers that would rob the central authority of most power.
