Isn't Mahayana more widespread that Theravada. Masses mostly practice pure land which is Mahayana school, while Theravada is the small vehicle for monks. Also, Vajrayana needs a guru, its utmost importance, and you have to find some serious teacher who doesn't just collect money from people and abuse them in return. You can seriously cause harm for yourself with Vajrayana if you are careless, same with other paths but Vajrayana is specially volatile path. OP should mostly see is there a sangha nearby, but he won't, its like most religious larpers here, pagans or christians, they adopt a identity but not the practice.
