Means you're not allowed to go to work and they don't pay for it. But you're not "fired." It's a trick that employers do so that the person that's on unpaid leave can't apply for unemployment.

Can you call in 'sick' just before and still get paid?

This may happen to my brother. He got severe GBS from a vaccine 10 years ago and our employer won't accept that as an exemption despite getting letters from specialists.

If he's in Ontario he should be okay. The Ontario Court ruled that they can't do unpaid leave. They said it counted as "Conditional employment" and is a no-no here. Even if he's in another province his lawyer if it gets to that should refer to that case.
