No, none of them were unemployed as they went on strike. They cancelled all their jobs. As another user explained, their schedule is flexible (it's basically contract work) if they own their own truck (which most do). They started this due to new federal mandates that were going to put them all out of a job if they're unvax'd. However, vax'd truckers are anti-mandate and are a large part of this protest, in solidarity to the unvax'd. There are about 400k truckers in canada overall. Of these, needless to say, only a small fraction came to ottawa to demonstrate. That doesn't mean that the rest are working all the jobs. Based on testimonies by the truckers who did go to ottawa, almost all truckers are on their side. That doesn't necessarily mean none are working and we don't know the figures on that. People that purportedly work with logistics have been saying they're completely unable to book trucks in canada right now due to the protest, and others say that transport cost had already doubled last week in anticipation for this. If true, the effect is massive. Once again, this is partly hearsay and we don't know the real figures.
