It's also natural to want to know what happened to you when that thing ruined your life, and the lack of physical markers would be disheartening there. Furthermore their presence can help convince people that you deserve medical treatment. I mostly agree that in the end what matters is material, not metaphysical, though.

That's a really healthy way to think of things. It's just not how I feel lol. Having The Right Metaphysical Essence somehow feels really important to me. Less so than it used to but still. Purely hypothetically, if it turned out that this was just some normal desire that creeped into my head and took over my life, I'd be devastated. However transitioning would still be the right move, and it'd be better for everyone to think as you do in any case.
If you want something, and having that thing makes you happy, and no one else is harmed, why not take it? That's freedom. That's power. That's flourishing. A just society should always support such endeavors. When I'm strong I recognize this, but when I'm weak I just can't shake the childish fantasy of a glittery soul. Not to validate my actions but to justify my life and everything I went through.
