In my experience, men are into it for a variety of reason. some are just horny and need sex and will take a small, cute feminine boy as consolation prize. Some are really into the feminization aspect and actively seek it out, encourage it etc....Some are really just into the cute boy and tolerate the panties in order to get the boy in them. You say demonizing passing trans women, but I've seen trans women use it on themselves as a positive term because of the implications they pass as an attractive cis girl. It's frustrating that cis guys are grouped in with them. But anyways the term trap is mainly used on male anime characters that fit the otokonoko archetype nowadays. Most straight men only like them in anime anyways. Boys that crossdress or are androgynous enough pass as women rarely exist irl. I'd say it's more gay for a straight guy to like femboys since they just look like twinks in girl clothes and not like women
