Putting on serious muscle mass (as in a double digit percent weight gain) requires either steroids or overeating + very heavy lifting for a very long time, like years, and looks great until you stop lifting due to lifestyle changes (had a kid, got an injury, etc), at which point you will look like absolute shit, dadbod tier, and there's no going back to being slim at that point

You can look strong and fit without looking like a cartoon character, unless you have a really weird skeleton putting on 7 or 8 pounds of muscle mass in the right places will look like a big change because it also changes how you carry yourself and how your clothes drape on your frame
Also note I said muscle mass not weight, if you're bulking up, you could be gaining 12 pounds in weight but a significant part of that is increased water retention and some fat as well from the calorie surplus. Obviously this also depends on your starting weight
