My take is that proximity to trans people makes you aware of the wider social meme of gender, and then you start interrogating your feelings trying to figure out if your cis identity is something authentic or something you were assimilated into. That there might be a "real" identity buried beneath a bunch of social conditioning. For most people, you will walk away slightly less gender conforming than before. For exceptional individuals, they might convince themselves that this means they need to transition. This is usually rash, imo. Contra was a clear repressor.
